Building for the Future

Our Foundation

Stotfold Junior Football Club has grown into one of the largest and most respected grassroots football clubs in the region — something every member of the club should be enormously proud of. That success has been built over decades through the dedication of volunteers, the commitment of players and families, and a shared belief in creating a positive, inclusive football environment.

Founded in 1976, SJFC began with a single team competing in the Royston & District Youth Football League. Wearing the “Old Gold and Black” colours of the senior club, early matches were played at quieter times on the main pitch at Roker Park — modest beginnings that laid strong and lasting foundations. By the 1978/79 season, the club had already achieved its first major milestone, with George Howell’s Under‑12 team securing a league and cup double.

From those early years, SJFC grew steadily into a thriving community club, now supporting hundreds of players across boys’ and girls’ teams from Under‑7s through to Under‑18s. While the scale of the club has evolved, its core identity has remained unchanged: a commitment to community, inclusivity, and player-first development.

This commitment has been recognised through FA accreditation and regional awards. In 2003, SJFC became the first club in Mid Bedfordshire to achieve FA Charter Standard Development Club status, followed by multiple recognitions as the FA’s Best Development Club in the East of England. The introduction of the Development Centre in 2016 further strengthened the club’s pathway, enabling engagement with players from as young as three and providing a clear route into team football.

SJFC has also contributed to the wider game, most notably through the early development of Matthew Oakley, who progressed from the club to a Premier League career, including an appearance in the 2003 FA Cup Final.

More recently, the club has strengthened its connection with Stotfold FC, with the opening of the JSJ Stadium creating a clear pathway from grassroots youth football through to adult and veteran levels.

Entering its 50th year, SJFC continues to serve the community with passion, integrity, and a commitment to inclusive, lifelong football. This proposal exists because of that success, not in spite of it. As the club continues to grow, the structure that supports it must evolve to match the scale and complexity of the organisation it has become — ensuring it remains sustainable, inclusive, and fit for the future.
